Recent Massey University studies indicate that almost half (41%) of the water tanks tested in a nationwide study are polluted.
According to the study the likely sources of contamination are from faecal material from birds, frogs, rodents, possums, dead animals on roofs or in gutters or in the tank itself.
As well as being an unpleasant thought, this can lead to stomach upsets and ill health.
